The author first elaborates the historical and architectural background of the temples in detail before he proceeds to explain the significant temples one by one in the timeline of its creation.

The architectural explanations are also very well done/5. In the initial stages of its evolution, the temples of North and South India were distinguished on the basis of some specific features like sikhara and gateways.

In the north Indian temples, the sikhara remained the most prominent component while the gateway was generally unassuming.

The most prominent features of South Indian temples were. North - South is a very broad distinction. India has three types of temple architectures (broadly speaking). Nagara (between Himalayas and Vindyas), Dravida (South of Deccan) and Vesara (Deccan region).

But for the purpose of this question, I will. India has always had something of a split personality. On one side is north India, with its spire-topped shikhara temples, colonial customs and abundance of British and Mughal monuments.

On the other is the Dravidian south, where the culture, customs and cuisines of colonial powers had only a passing influence on the local way of life. India's landscapes are as fantastically varied as its cultural traditions.

From the snow-dusted peaks of the Himalaya to the sun-splashed beaches of the tropical south, the country has a bounty of outdoor attractions. You can scout for big jungle cats on scenic wildlife safaris, paddle in the shimmering waters of coastal retreats, take blood. The structures are a mix of rathas-shaped (Chariot) temples, mandapas (cave) temples, huge open-air rock reliefs and the Shore temple, all dedicated to Lord Shiva.

The city itself was built way back in the first and second century, and today, it is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mahabalipuram Temples, Tamil Nadu, India. Temples of North India [Government of India] on *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers.
